The Trestle Bridge between Lewiston and Auburn, Maine has a rich history
involved with the fabric mills on either side of the river. In recent years
it was renovated and re-opened as a walking bridge. In early August, Lewiston/Auburn
is home to the Great Falls Balloon Festival, held on the banks of the Androscoggin
River. Years ago my band Scrod Pudding would play for a contradance on the
bridge during the festival, and the last waltz was timed to coincide with
the evening balloon launch. The image has stayed with me ever since of the
dancers waltzing on the bridge at sunset with the balloons rising all around
them.
